Our PhotoVoice project stemmed from a desire to connect with our Magnolia Park and East End neighbors at a deeper level by asking folks to take pictures of things that are most important to our community. First developed in 1992, the PhotoVoice method has been used around the world to capture the experiences and perspectives of people from all walks of life. As the saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words” and indeed PhotoVoice has been effective in promoting collective action and public policy changes through photographic images.

We launched this project in April 2023 and asked folks to text in their pictures and then answer a few questions in an online survey. Coming soon are the pictures that were featured in the September 2023 exhibit, including 96 pictures from 64 community members whose ages range from 14 to 72 years old, as well as the stories that they told us about their pictures.

Stay tuned!
